East Providence, RI – Sprinkler system activated for fire in commercial building; No injuries reported

A two-alarm fire broke out at a commercial building in East Providence on Sunday morning, city fire officials said.

Around 6:43 a.m., East Providence fire officials were alerted of a fire at 830 Waterman Ave. Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire coming from the loading dock and that the fire sprinkler system was activated.

Fire officials said they quickly struck a second alarm and made an aggressive attack at the flames inside the building.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire, according to authorities. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The East Providence fire department received mutual aid from Seekonk, Massachusetts. Providence, Pawtucket and Barrington covered the fire stations.

Warwick, RI – Sprinkler System assists fire fighters in containing apartment fire

Alarms woke residents of a 46-unit building at Les Chateaux, 1403 Warwick Ave., at 3 a.m. Saturday, and they ran out into the freezing night.

Sixty people escaped, 49 adults and 11 children in 35 families, according to a Red Cross spokeswoman Sunday evening. They were given temporary shelter in a hotel.

Warwick Battalion Chief Thomas F. Brady said he heard the zone alarms, from first to second to third, track the smoke rising through the stairwells of the three-story building that is parallel to Warwick Avenue.

Smoke filled the lobby, Brady said, and firefighters could see flames entering from the hall.

He said the fire started in a basement storage area, set off a sprinkler near the boiler, then rolled across the ceiling and up the stairs to the first-floor hallway. The fire door on the right was closed, which he said prevented damage on that side, but rooms along the hallway going left from the elevator had burns on their doors from the top to about three feet above the floor.

Without knowing that everyone had escaped safely, the first engine called a second alarm to bring more help in searching. About 32 firefighters worked the scene.

No firefighters were hurt, Brady said, but two residents suffered smoke injuries and one slipped and fell on the ice.

The temperature was 18 degrees, Brady said, and residents did not have time to grab car keys or warm clothes. Buses arrived to take them to the Pilgrim Senior Center, so they could be warm while the Red Cross enrolled them for services.

Flames were arrested at the first floor within about a half hour of the first truck arriving and attacking the the origin area with a single hose, he said. Two companies worked the roof. The wind helped clear smoke after firefighters opened sliding glass doors in each room.

At about 5 a.m., firefighters provided escorts to allow one resident from each unit to retrieve keys, medications, cell phones and other necessities before the building, which had no water, heat or electricity, was secured.

Some residents are displaced after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Providence Saturday night.

The Providence Fire Department responded to Bissell Street around 10:15 p.m. for a report of a small mattress fire on the second floor.

Upon arrival, crews said the sprinkler system in the apartment helped to take down much of the fire.

Deputy Chief Mahoney said two units out of about twelve are inhabitable due to water damage.

One man was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Crews stayed on scene until about 12 a.m. investigating.

East Greenwich, RI – Fire at restaurant extinguished by sprinkler system before fire crews arrived

Police were called to Besos Kitchen and Cocktails on Main Street to assist East Greenwich Fire with a call for a fire to the exterior of the building by the front door. Westerly, RI – Fire in kitchen area of restaurant is put out by sprinkler system

A wok fire at New China Pavilion caused a bit of a stir just before lunchtime last Wednesday, but a sprinkler helped douse the fire, preventing any damage to the restaurant. They arrived to find that a small fire had occurred involving a wok in the kitchen area, but the flames were out before officials arrived. The restaurant staff vented much of the smoke quickly and emergency responders were cleared from the scene in approximately 15 minutes. The restaurant resumed normal operations.

Providence, RI – Sprinkler system controlled tractor trailer truck fire in parking garage

A tractor trailer truck caught fire Tuesday morning at the loading dock of the North Garage at the Providence Place mall.

Firefighters responded at 8:17 a.m. and found the cab of the truck fully in flames, according to an email from Lindsay Lague, spokeswoman for Providence public safety.

Two sprinkler heads above the truck activated, and fire crews helped extinguish the fire with a hose, Lague wrote.

The fire was under control as of 8:50 a.m., but smoke persisted in the loading dock area, the parking garage and some areas of the mall.

Crews metered the parking garage and other public areas for carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, but there were no issues with either gas.

Crews were able to clear the smoke and the mall opened on time at 10 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Newport, RI – Kitchen fire at historic senior apartment building controlled by sprinkler system

Two apartments at Clarke School Apartments, 24 Mary St., remained uninhabitable as of Friday afternoon due to fire, smoke and water damage in one apartment and water damage in a second apartment below it, according to Fire Chief Brian Dugan.  The report of a fire in a third-floor apartment came in on Wednesday at about 2:10 p.m. and people were evacuating the building when firefighters arrived, Dugan said.

There was a stovetop fire in the kitchen that had activated the sprinkler system, which did a good job of controlling the damage, Dugan said. The fire was doused within 10 minutes after firefighters arrived, and most of that time was spent getting hoses and equipment up to the apartment, he said.  No cause of the fire had been established as of Friday and it remains under investigation, Dugan said.

One of the tenants has received living accommodations through the Red Cross, according to the fire chief. Reports from tenants said three elderly residents in all have not been able to return to their apartments.  Residents said there is some water and smoke damage in other apartments that remain occupied.

The Clarke School was built in 1915 and underwent a historic renovation in 1994 when it was developed into more than 50 privately operated affordable apartments. The apartments are reserved for people 55 or older, as well as disabled individuals, and some income restrictions apply.

The sprinkler system was going off in the room when firefighters arrived.  The classroom where the fire took place was badly damaged, and other rooms had some smoke and water damage, according to fire officials.  School district administrators have told fire officials that the incident shouldn’t affect the start of the school year.

Providence, RI – Sprinkler system controls fire that started in mixing vat at mill

No one was hurt and no significant damage occurred when a fire broke out in a mixing vat at a Livingston Street mill building, Chief William Kenyon said.  The fire at 35 Livingston St. was confined to the mixing vat in a room where soap products were made, Kenyon said, and appeared to have been started by an inadvertent mix of substances.  The building sprinkler system came on immediately, he said, and kept the fire under control. Firefighters arrived shortly after that, since the department’s Branch Avenue station near the North Burial Ground was around the block and down the street from the building.  Firefighters ran two hoses into the building to make sure the fire was doused, he said.  No more information was immediately available.

Westerly, RI – Closet fire at high school extinguished with help from sprinkler system

A small fire that started in the closet of a technology room at Westerly High School Tuesday was caused by an electrical malfunction in a piece of audio-visual equipment being stored in the closet.

Westerly Fire Chief John Mackay said Wednesday that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire, adding that the school’s sprinkler system worked effectively and aided firefighters in quickly containing and extinguishing the small closet fire. The fire never spread outside the closet, officials said, and no injuries were reported.

Westerly firefighters and police were dispatched to the high school just after 3:15 p.m. Tuesday with reports of a box alarm sounding. They arrived to find black smoke coming from a closet in the tech room closest to the gymnasium foyer. Mackay said the sprinkler system had already doused most of the flames by the time firefighters arrived.

Classes were back in session on Wednesday.
